Lesson 10.1: VMS Showdown (Genetec, Milestone, Avigilon, Verkada)

Module: 10 – Product Selection & System Design

Prerequisites: Lesson 6.2 (Software Integration)

Estimated Time: 45–60 Minutes

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Critique the “Big Four” VMS platforms based on Architecture (On-Prem vs. Cloud) and Openness.
  • Match the correct VMS to the vertical (e.g., Retail, Airport, or Small Office).
  • Explain the “Tax” of proprietary systems (Vendor Lock-in) vs. the “Labor” of open systems (Configuration heavy).
  • Calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) differences between CAPEX (Upfront) and OPEX (Subscription) models.

2. The Open Platform King: Milestone Systems

  • The Philosophy: “We are the Windows of Security.”
  • Architecture: Software-only. You buy your own Dell/HP servers and storage.
  • Strengths:
    • Device Support: Integration with almost every camera brand on earth (10,000+ drivers).
    • Scalability: Works for a 7-Eleven (Milestone Essentials) or an Airport (Milestone Corporate).
    • Failover: Best-in-class recording server redundancy.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Complexity: You are responsible for Windows Updates, SQL management, and Driver packs.
    • Cost: The “Corporate” edition has a high upfront license cost per camera.
  • Ideal Client: Hospitals, Universities, and sites with mixed camera brands (Axis, Hanwha, Sony).

3. The Unified Powerhouse: Genetec

  • The Philosophy: “One Platform, One Database.”
  • Architecture: Security Center (Omnicast/Synergis). It is not just a VMS; it natively includes Access Control and LPR.
  • Strengths:
    • Unification: Video and Access events are linked in the same SQL database. No API required.
    • Federation: Can link hundreds of separate sites into one Global Command Center.
    • Map Interface: Best-in-class interactive mapping (Plan Manager).
  • Weaknesses:
    • Learning Curve: High. Certification is mandatory and difficult.
    • Hardware Heavy: Requires powerful servers to run the “Directory” and “Archiver” roles.
  • Ideal Client: Airports, Casinos, Cities, Enterprise Global HQs.

4. The “Apple” Approach: Avigilon (Motorola)

  • The Philosophy: “It just works (if you buy our stuff).”
  • Architecture: ACC (Avigilon Control Center). They prefer you buy their servers and their cameras.
  • Strengths:
    • Analytics: Appearance Search (Find “Man in Red Shirt”) is incredible, but only works well if you use Avigilon cameras.
    • UI/UX: The easiest interface for non-technical guards to use.
    • Bandwidth: HDSM (High Definition Stream Management) technology manages bandwidth better than anyone, allowing 30MP cameras on slow networks.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Vendor Lock-In: If you use 3rd party cameras, you lose most of the smart features.
  • Ideal Client: School Districts, Police Stations, Stadiums.

5. The Cloud Disruptor: Verkada

  • The Philosophy: “No NVRs. No Servers.”
  • Architecture: Hybrid Cloud. The camera stores video on a built-in 128GB SD drive and sends thumbnails/metadata to the Cloud (AWS).
  • Strengths:
    • Installation: Plug it in. Done. No server configuration.
    • Warranty: 10-Year hardware warranty (unheard of in the industry).
    • Modernity: The App feels like Instagram/Tesla. Very slick.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Proprietary: You must buy Verkada cameras. You cannot reuse existing cameras.
    • The “Brick” Risk: If you stop paying the yearly license fee, the camera stops working entirely. It doesn’t even record locally.
  • Ideal Client: Property Management, Retail Chains, tech startups (Places with no IT staff).
